Camp Gate Reverse of Crispus

This is a camp gate reverse type struck in the name of Constantine I's son Crispus while he was still a caesar. the unbroken obverse legend around the left facing bust reads FL IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES. The bust facing left is quite a bit less common than the right facing bust on most of the emperors and caesars but is present on many of the coins of Crispus.

This type of AE4 with camp gate reverse was struck during the reigns of Constantine I and his sons Crispus, Constantine II, Constans, and Constantius II.

The camp gate device alluded to the strength of the Roman army and the protection it afforded the Roman people against attack by foreign invaders.
