Camp Gate Reverse of Crispus

This is a camp gate reverse type struck in the name of Constantine I's son Crispus while he was still a caesar. It has the PROVIDENTIAE CAESS reverse legend often used to commemorate the birth of a boy to the imperial family.

Due to a thinness of the planchet in the exergue area beneath the camp gate device, the mint letters are completely missing from this coin. The style of lettering leads the author to believe that the mint was probably a western one, possibly Rome or trier.

This type of AE4 with camp gate reverse was struck during the reigns of Constantine I and his sons Crispus, Constantine II, Constans, and Constantius II.
