Sol in Quadriga facing on a Radiate of Probus

In this, one of the most dramatically dynamic images found on any Roman coin, Sol holds his whip high while four horses pull his speeding chariot straight out of the scene toward the viewer. In order to show the magnificence and power of the beasts, the artist has bent the laws of physics and geometry somewhat so that the two pairs of horses appear to be pulling against each other to the left and right.
