Equestrian Portrait of Gordianus III

Holding a spear and waving, this type is similar to the ADVENTVS AVG types of antoniniani and radiates with emperor mounted on horseback. The legend gives us an abbreviated summary of his offices and titles, which is extremely useful to scholars of our own age in dating the coins and the artifacts found with coin hoards. Note also the overly large serifs and the smearing of the letters in striking.
