Mounted Castor and Pollux on a Roman Republican Denarius

The Diooscuri, or Heavenly Twins Castor and Pollux were the patron gods of the Roman cavalry and the Equestrian class or knighthood by extension. This standard mounted image of them, according to tradition, depicts them on their way to water their horses at the fountain in Rome after the battle in which they saved Rome from being betrayed by Lars Porsena.
