The AE1, AE2, AE3, and AE4 designations on late Roman coins specify four distinct size groupings and were devised by collectors to help in classifying these pieces. AE1 is greater than 25mm, AE2 21 - 25mm AE3 16 - 21mm, and AE4 is less than 16mm. There is still much debate amongst scholars concerning the name the Romans gave their various bronze denominations during the late empire. Nomisma is one possibility, or they may have just referred to them as units of money.
