Camp Gate Reverse of Constantine I

A splendid portrait of the emperor Constantine graces the obverse of this AE3 with camp gate reverse. The image is that of a powerfully built young man in the prime of his life. The emperor's face is the well fleshed out face of an athlete, a fighter, a thrower of javelins and a wielder of heavy edged weapons. The rounded, protruding chin is definitely his, but the exaggerated, thick neck is a feature of the standard Tetrarchic portrait of the previous period. This coin, of good thickness and diameter, was probably struck in the mid 320's AD and represents a transition from the large diameter follises of the tetrarchs and the smaller AE3's of the 330's which had a somewhat more feminine looking portrait.

This coin has the camp gate reverse with the PROVIDENTIAE AVGG legend and was purchased in XF+ condition by the author for about fifty dollars. Though priced more than the three to eight dollar dealer junkbox coins with which these articles are concerned, the piece was nevertheless a good bargain as they are scarce in this condition
