Roman Republican Denarius - Bituitus in Biga Reverse

The serrations on Republican denarii of this period were often painstakingly applied by hand. They were supposedly a guarantee that the coin was of good silver rather than copper plated with silver and there was no need to test the coin with a punch. However, there have been numerous serrated denarii found that were contemporary forgeries - copper cores plated with silver!

Seaby Roman Silver Coins vol I Catalog Number Pomponia 7
Issued about 118 B. C.
