Reverse of This Coin - Coin List

Nicely Patinated Copper AE 22 of Faustina II Issued at Pautalia

The delicate fabric of this little coin forms a striking contrast to the bold devices usually seen on Greek Imperial coins. The centration dimple falls right where the ear should be, and does not mar the coin's artistic style as much as these unfortunate features often do. In fact, the centration dimple appears partially filled on the obverse and is almost nonexistent on the reverse. They were a normal feature of Roman Provincial coinage and were probably caused by an attempt to true up the flan on an early form of lathe.
