Obverse of This Coin - Coin List

Copper As of Faustina I

The allegory of eternity portrayed in the figure of Aeternitas on the reverse of this As of Faustina I along with the DIVA FAVSTINA legend on the obverse indicate that this coin is a memorial issue struck after her death and apotheosis. The abundance of memorial coins struck in Faustina's name and the diversity of their types may very well tell a story of a grief - stricken Antoninus Pius who wished to see that the memory of his beloved wife endured for all time. The evidence is purely circumstantial, based on the quantity and variety of these coins which are available to collectors today. If this had really been his wish, he has clearly achieved his objective. Portrait coins of Faustina I are the easiest of the female portrait Roman coins to obtain, and amongst the easiest of all Denarii for the collector to find. The author's first Roman coin was in fact a worn Denarius of Faustina I, but that is, again another story.
