Please Help Supply Information About these Images

Back to History and Technology Back Pages The home page for this entire site.

I have, from time to time, gathered various scraps of information at different events. They need to be checked for accuracy as they were usually written down on small pieces of paper hurriedly while talking to a participant or support person.

More recently added images of Neperdac Hall 1996, Ardenwood Park 1997, and Dunsmuir House, both 1996 and 1997.

Most of these images are of St. Andrew's Guild members taken at Dunsmuir House Highland Games, 1996, Monterey Highland Games, 1996, Pleasanton Highland Games 1996, Ardenwood Park, Highland Games 1997, and Dunsmuir House Highland Games, 1997. Some of the images are of other reenactment groups, possibly the Royal Stuarts Scottish performers Guild, the St. Ambrose Acting Group, a group simply known to us as The "Barbarians," and others. We are attempting to put together a coherent overview of information concerning Scottish Renaissance Reenactment and its relationship to actual histoical events. We have been kicking various ideas around for about a year. As this project gathers momentum, we intend to publish the material we are able to gather on a Website hosted on a university server. The groups we would like to serve include history buffs, current and potential Renaissance reenactors, coin collectors, and especially classroom teachers through our Beyond Classroom Walls project. We are attempting to gather information on as many of the following topics as possible concerning each character portrayed and the real life actor portraying the character. Details we are looking for include, but are not limited to:

WTA007.JPG Beautifully worked halberd blade carried by one of Queen Mary's Black Watch Guard.
HGW0002.JPG What is the name of this group of reenactors or actor's guild? Partial name on flag is (CL)AN MAC M(IL)HAOILEAN or something similar.
HGW0004.JPG Same group as in the the entry above.
HGW0007.JPG Who are the ladies? Lords? servants? senechals? etc. and what are their roles?
HGW0008.JPG Who are these people? This was taken at Dunsmuir House, 1996 but the people don't look like St. Andrews Guild members.
HGW0009.JPG Taken at Dunsmuir House, 1996. These appear to be reenactors from a clan, probably from a much later era.
HGW0010.JPG This woman and girl appear to be portraying people from the Nineteenth Century.
HGW0013.JPG Are these people members of St. Andrews Guild? Does anybody have info about who they are and who they are portraying?
HGW0014.JPG Who is this girl dressed in an ancient style kilt?
HGW0015.JPG Who is this and who is he portraying?
HGW0021.JPG Who is the woman holding the small round shield? These people appear to be in 16th Century garb. Are they with St. Andrews Guild?
LADYHTW.JPG Please supply information concerning this image of a St. Andrews Guild reenactor.
PLES961W.JPG Please supply information concerning these images of ancient Scottish reenactors at the Monterey Games, 1996.
HGW0024.JPG Do you know anything about these weapons?
PLES962W.JPG Please supply information concerning these images of ancient Scottish reenactors at the Pleasanton Games, 1996.
HGW0026.JPG Please supply information concerning these images of ancient Scottish reenactors (at Dunsmuir House, 1996?)
HGW0027.JPG Do you know anything about these weapons?
HGW0028.JPG These people are known to us only by the name "Barbarians." Can you supply any more info, corrections, etc?
PLES963W.JPG> Please supply information concerning these images of ancient Scottish reenactors.
PLES964W.JPG HRM Mary. Queen of Scotland and the Isles with several ladies - in - waiting at Pleasanton, 1996. Can anybody supply both faire and real - life names of these St. Andrews Guild reenactors?
PLES965W.JPG Please supply information concerning these images of ancient Scottish reenactors at the Pleasanton Games, 1996.
PLES976W.JPG Pleasanton, 1996. Can anybody supply both faire and real - life names of these St. Andrews Guild reenactors? The event portrayed included a handfasting ceremony.
PLES977W.JPG We need names of characters portrayed and roles played by the people in this procession
HGW0059.JPG Details? Place? Event?
HGW0060.JPG Probably taken at Dunsmuir House, 1996. Three men and two women conversing in front of canopy.
HGW0061.JPG Are these children St. Andrews members?
HGW0063.JPG Dame Helen? and another woman, three men in background, probably Dunsmuir House 1996.
HGW0065.JPG Who are these two regal looking gents photographed on the football field at Campbell, 1995 or 1996?
HGW0066.JPG The same three gents as in image HGW0065.JPG above, but three more of their buddies are in the picture. Who are they?
HGW0067.JPG Gent wearing a beret and holding a spontoon type polearm, kilted gent behind, probably Dunsmuir House 1996.
HGW0069.JPG Closeup of two of the women in image HGW0060.JPG above.
HGW0070.JPG Whose weapons are these? I believe I saw them at the tent of the Barbarians at Dunsmuir House, 1996.
WELIZ1.JPG Reverse of a hammered sixpence of Elizabeth I of England.
WJAMES1.JPG Reverse of a hammered shilling of James I of England.
WMON0001.JPG I believe these two ladies are bembers of the Royal Stuarts Actor's Guild. Does anybody have any information about that group or these ladies?
WMON0002.JPG These are the same two ladies as shown in the image above. What is the thing that looks like it is protruding from the head of the lady at the right? It looks like a wasp's nest but appears to be part of her headdress. I would think there would be a similar structure on the left side of the headdress as well, if indeed this was the case. Part of the other piece would then be visible behind her neck. This part of the image is not making too much sense to the author.
WMON0003.JPG The same two ladies as seen in the above photos are seen here again, this time without the strange object protruding from the head of the lady on the left.
WSTA001A.JPG Lady Cora and Dame Helen MaGlashan at Dunsmuir House, 1996?
WSTA002.JPG The only person in this photo that the author recognizes is Lady Cora, fifth from left. What is the function of this tent? We would dearly like to know who the others are, their faire names, and something about the characters they portray.
WSTA002B.JPG This is a cropped closeup of the image displayed above.
WSTA003.JPG These are four of the six ladies seen in WSTA002.JPG above.
WSTA004.JPG This picture of the Black Watch performing drills and manoeuvres for the pleasure of HRH Mary, Queen of Scots was taken in the afternoon of one of the two days at Dunsmuir House, 1996. It would be nice to have their names. Some more recently added images of the Black Watch halberdiers can be found by linking here.
WSTA005.JPG Don't they look good marching with the sunlight reflecting off their halberds. I'm glad they're friendly!
WSTA006.JPG Here's another view of the Black Watch performing manoeuvres for Her Majesty.
WSTA008.JPG Is Dame Helen about to issue orders to the servants? In the author's humble opinion, it is images like this that really transport us across time and space and REALLY place us smack in the middle of the court of this Sixteenth Century legendary queen and woman of noble character. This is a Holbein painting come to life, complete with the red hair, regal bearing, and meticulously crafted garb of a highborn lady at court. She is captured at the precise instant of performing some important administrative function, greeting an ambassador, or eloquently rebuking a miscreant at the court of the queen. Marc Goldman takes some real show - stopping pictures at times. This image is available in a high resolution digital form suitable for use in a glossy program or other printed publication. Marc has been asking only for a photo credit, and Jay King has the digital images on CD.
WSTA009.JPG Seoras McGovern is looking good here, holding a classic Claymore sword with the forward - raked quillons clearly visible in this image. I believe he is a senechal to His Grace, Sir James Melville, but I'm not sure. Please confirm or correct this info.
WSTA010.JPG Lady Cora in a procession with her majesty. Unfortunately, the sun was quite bright that day and the highlights on her face become a little too washed out when we brought up the detail of her gown and jewellery in Photoshop. A procession or parade in bright sunlight makes for some extremely difficult photographic conditions as there is way too much contrast, washing out highlights while leaving other parts of the image in deep shadow. Better shots of the whole figure, including face and garb under better lighting can be had by placing the subject under trees or a canopy and using fill flash. Nevertheless, we sometimes get good shots of the very important procession events when the sun hides for a little while behind a cloud. The pose with the purple - lined basket is very regal, looking like an authentic lady - in - waiting of the period. Most people are not aware of the high calibre of acting skills possessed by the people in this group. Again, this is part of what makes it worthwhile to document this type of historical reenactment.
WSTA011.JPG Dame Helen in the same procession as above. Again, it is too bad there was so much light on her face.
WSTA020.JPG One had best be respectful, showing all due courtesy and keeping a very low profile when in the presence of this dangerous looking group of gentlemen. These are military men, trained in the Arts of Warfare and Combat. They are sworn to protect Her Majesty. Anyone who steps put of line is liable to wind up as just so much dogmeat, already skewered and ready for the roasting. Again ditto on the sunlight on faces. Darn!!
WSTA021.JPG This appears to be Seoras McGregor, His Grace Sir James, ?? and ??
WSTA022.JPG More Black Watch. Those in the very front and back are the only ones under ideal lighting conditions for a group photo.
WSTA023.JPG Who is the gent on the left? What are the ornate brass or gold items of jewellery on Sir james' tunic?
WSTA024.JPG Is the lady in the centre wearing a type of period garb or is this more modern dress? Who is she?
WSTA025.JPG Here's another shot of Seoras with more of the Claymore visible.
WSTA026.JPG Is the lady on the left wearing a beaver felt hat? In 1562, the fur trade in the New World would have been in its infancy, if any Europeans were trapping or trading for beaver at all at this early date. Beaver would have been in high fashion two centuries later. Who is the lady?
WSTA027.JPG This carefully posed picture has the faces of the halberdiers in subdued light under the trees. The halberds, on the other hand, have been rotated to catch the light just right to show up in high contrast against the trees in the background. Who is the gent with mustache on the left? The one with long blond hair in ancient Viking tradition on the right?
WSTA080.JPGWho is standing next to Lady Cora in this image?
WSTA081.JPG This appears to be Seoras McGovern and his two daughters.
WSTA082.JPG There is MUCH better lighting on Lady Cora's face in this image. This was taken at Monterey in the Summer of 1996. How do the reenactors keep from getting dust on their garb? Many of them look like they have just come from the ballroom floor instead of having spent several hours in a dusty sylvan setting in dark, heavy clothing on a hot Summer day.
WSTA083.JPG This is another image of Lady Cora, Rose Inga, and??? I believe Lady Cora told me in a phone conversation that Rose Inga was about to be knighted Would she then be known as Lady Rose Inga?
WSTA28.JPG Timeless trees, Ladies in true Sixteenth Century garb, Sixteenth Century warriors with Eighteenth Century kilts and weapons that date back to Saladin and Henry II's time, a Nineteenth Century Victorian house (Dunsmuir House, in the flesh), and a backpack slung across a hand mini cart, c.1995 or so. Go figure.
WSTA29.JPG We made a point of taking great pains to get this fine weapon in sharp focus.
WSTA30.JPG It looks like everybody here is having a good time looking good. I wonder if the gent in the yellow beret keeps that blade in his boot handy so he can despatch bad punsters quickly, when they are caught in the act.
WSTA31.JPG Can anybody supply both faire and real - life names of these St. Andrews Guild reenactors at Dunsmuir House, 1996?
WSTA32.JPGWhat clans are represented by the heraldic devices on these pennants?
WSTAO12.JPG Beautiful workmanship on a halberd belonging to a member of Queen Mary's Black Watch Guard. (St. Andrews Guild, one of three images.)
WSTAO13.JPG Beautiful workmanship on a halberd belonging to a member of Queen Mary's Black Watch Guard. (St. Andrews Guild, one of three images.)
WSTAO14.JPG Beautiful workmanship on a halberd belonging to a member of Queen Mary's Black Watch Guard. (St. Andrews Guild, one of three images.)
