The Triumph of Probus

Obverse:
IMP CM AVR PROBVS AVG Draped bust facing right. The toll taken by many years in the field battling Persians and Goths is seen in Probus' face in this portrait. It is rare to see such sensitive portraiture executed on a late Third Century Roman coin. It would have circulated amongst some of the crudest coinage in the world if some fortunate accident of fate had not preserved it in almost mint state for collectors to admire over 1700 years later.

Reverse:
PROVIDEN DEOR, KH delta in exergue. Fides hldg two standards l. facing Sol r. who holds globe in l. hand and raises r. hand, * between.

The coin is listed in David Sear's Roman Coins and their Values as s3379.
