The Triumph of Probus

Obverse:
IMP C PROBVS PF AVG Cuirassed military bust of Probus facing right. One can see the exquisitely designed parade armor even though the coin is somewhat worn and corroded. Also visible are the vestiges of one of those great medallions often seen on the the coin portraits of Probus. One of the things that makes this emperor's coins so interesting is the great variety of armor Probus models for his coin portraits. He seems to have a numismatic awareness not often seen in Third Century emperors or their coin designs. Future archaeological research may reveal that probus, like some other ancient rulers, was an avid coin collector.

Reverse:
ERCVLI PACIF Hercules standing left holding olive branch and club.

The coin is listed in David Sear's Roman Coins and their Values as s3379.
