The Triumph of Probus

Reverse:
FIDES MILITVM, H thunderbolt E in exergue. Fides standing facing viewer holding two standards.

The form of the traditional Roman battle standard is very clearly modeled on the reverse of this coin. Evidence gathered through archaeological research, study of Roman art in other media, and ancient written sources leads to the conclusion that long banners were used by late Third Century Roman legions in the place of the traditional vexillum. The vexillum lingered on as a symbol used in allegorical figures and images used on coins and elsewhere.

Obverse:
IMP PROBVS PF AVG Draped and cuirassed bust facing right.
