Sol in Quadriga Left
In this portrait, the sun god Sol is shown charging to the left in a chariot pulled by four horses. Though this coin reverse is more primitively executed than the previous gallery image, the reins and the four horses' heads clearly show. Also clearly depicted are the long spikes on the radiate crown worn by the naked figure of the deity. Like many of the images found on Roman coins, the rear legs of the horses are distorted and spindly. Hind legs of horses are often shown this way even on coin portraiture that is otherwise beautifully and proportionately modeled. It was probably an artistic convnetion used to show the animal's speed and power.
The coin is listed in David Sear's Roman Coins and their Values as s3370.
