This type replaced the two soldiers, two standards reverse. After about 330 AD, inflation had shrunk the size of the flans from about 20mm to 17m and less. This necessitated removing one standard from the design in order to make the reverse less crowded.
The mintmark SMANI indicates that Antioch was the minting city, with the final Greek letter I (Iota) being the letter of the officina or workshop.
