Spear

A spear is often used on coins to stand for the military. Emperors are shown holding a spear, preparing to throw a spear, carrying a spear on horseback, or spearing a n enemy soldier. It often was used to signify that the emperor was active and victorious in chastising the empire’s enemies. It is also used to stand for defense of the empire or city. On the obverse of a coin, the emperor holds a spear or the personification of a city (ROMA, CONSTANTINOPOLIS) is shown with a spear over her shoulder.
