The Plain of Marathon

Not long after they won their right to their very survival at Marathon, the Athenians rose to become one of the greatest maritime powers in history. This Athenian Owl Tetradracm became a well known symbol of Athenian might throughout the Mediterranean.

The Tomb of the Plataeans

Here lie the bodies of the twelve brave Plataeans who helped Athens defend herself from the Persian menace. They died for all Greece.

The Plain of Marathon today, looking out toward the sea

This coin is actually a somewhat later type of around 350 B. C. Though very similar to the tetradracms in use at the time of the Battle of Marathon. The difference is seen in Athena's eye. In the older style, the large eye looked out the side of the face rather than straight ahead.

The Treasury of Atreus

Many wicked deeds were committed by the Mycenaean king Atreus and the family he founded. He had his brother's children boiled and served to him for dinner. He fathered a son by his daughter, and his family was continuously involved in one squabble or another. He was cursed by the gods for his deeds.
